Through a detective game, the students learn to brainstorm in a group of four, recount their imaginary detective findings, while they learn active listening skills.

This first unit focuses on the simple “Be verb: Yes/No questions,” which will help the learners to begin basic social skills such as starting a conversation. This lesson also focuses on the appreciation of cultures, interpersonal skills, and respect for self and others. It might be a good idea to ask the students to go to class in their national costume or any national costume they may want to represent. Let the students form an inner and outer circle (like speed dating style). The outer circle circulates clockwise while introducing themselves, “I am …………… .and practicing the question, “Where are you from?” The inner-circle answers, “Hi, I am …………. (name). “I am from……….” Reverse roles. The students will also recognize national flags, and share their own regional or national culture.
